Nearly 1000 strangulation charges laid within first 12 months of new laws

Police have laid almost 1000 charges of intentional choking, suffocating or strangling under a new offence introduced in NSW just months ago.

The Sun-Herald can reveal 899 charges have been laid under the new laws, announced last December in a bid to boost the rate of convictions against domestic violence perpetrators and take the onus off victims to prove that they were rendered unconscious.
